 1. Election of Lok Sabha

  • Authority: Conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
  • System: First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) – the candidate with the highest votes in each constituency wins.
  • Voting: Every Indian citizen aged 18 years or above has the right to vote.
  • Constituencies: India is divided into 543 parliamentary constituencies.
  • Frequency: Elections are held every 5 years, unless the Lok Sabha is dissolved earlier.
  • Government Formation: A party or coalition needs 272+ seats (majority) to form the central government.


2. Composition of Lok Sabha

  • Maximum Strength (as per Constitution): 552 members
    • 530 from States
    • 20 from Union Territories
    • 2 nominated by the President (from the Anglo-Indian community, if necessary — though this provision was removed by the 104th Amendment Act, 2019).
  • Present Strength: 543 elected members.
  • Term: Normally 5 years (can be dissolved earlier).
  • Representation:
    • Members are directly elected by the people.
    • Seats are allocated to states and UTs on the basis of their population (delimitation).
