1. Election of Lok Sabha
- Authority: Conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
- System: First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) – the candidate with the highest votes in each constituency wins.
- Voting: Every Indian citizen aged 18 years or above has the right to vote.
- Constituencies: India is divided into 543 parliamentary constituencies.
- Frequency: Elections are held every 5 years, unless the Lok Sabha is dissolved earlier.
- Government Formation: A party or coalition needs 272+ seats (majority) to form the central government.
2. Composition of Lok Sabha
- Maximum Strength (as per Constitution): 552 members
- 530 from States
- 20 from Union Territories
- 2 nominated by the President (from the Anglo-Indian community, if necessary — though this provision was removed by the 104th Amendment Act, 2019).
- Present Strength: 543 elected members.
- Term: Normally 5 years (can be dissolved earlier).
- Representation:
- Members are directly elected by the people.
- Seats are allocated to states and UTs on the basis of their population (delimitation).
